Values and experience behind my approach
Listen with empathy
and act with compassion.
Every design problem I come across, my first strategy is to walk a mile or two in the other person’s shoes. If I can heighten my understanding of a user’s needs and perspectives, I have a much better chance at helping the client to feel heard and design meaningful solutions early on in the process.
Remain open to try anything.
Technology in this field changes so fast, you just have to be. For example, there have been many times in my 20+ year career when I have had to learn a new software on the fly, and the challenge has been rewarding every time. Often the problems that pop up are so unique to the project that you discover creative solutions you otherwise wouldn’t have come across. The sense of accomplishment when the project is complete is that much sweeter, and you have a wider array of tools for tackling the next one.
Immerse yourself, experiment and play.
When you allow yourself to really experience something, flip it upside down, relish the exploration, and look at every angle, sometimes new and unexpected solutions begin to materialize. I believe savoring the process leads to masterful work and innovation.
Be the leader you wish you had, and inspire each other.
You don’t have to be the manager to lead and contribute to the work atmosphere, and I believe we all deserve an environment we can thrive and grow in. I have designed for eight different industries, and I have met and learned from so many great team members along the way - no matter what role they played on the team. I work to channel my best mentors so that I can be a supportive, constructive, and authentic member of the team. If I’m lucky, maybe I’ll pay it forward and inspire someone to follow my lead too.
Mistakes are a positive sign of learning new things.
Every one of us has their highs and lows. The trick to remember is to reframe the lessons so they can become future accomplishments and personal records. Of course, this can sometimes be easier said than done. My goal is to not only excel at flipping the script when I stumble myself, but also to be empathetic and constructive when coworkers struggle. I want to do what I can to foster a team environment where it’s safe to experiment, try new things, ask for help, and sometimes fail… because that’s where growth and innovation come from.
Know when to unplug.
I’m honest to a fault, and I have to admit that I sometimes struggle with turning off the brainstorming and problem solving I love so much. Still, my professional life has taught me that when I schedule in the down time, I actually become more efficient at the “on” time and the ideas flow in more freely. The pandemic tested this knowledge for me for a while, but I am happy to report being back to a healthy balance.
